Transcriptome analysis of human tissues and cell lines reveals one dominant transcript per gene.

The major transcript of 17 % of the protein-coding genes is non-coding. Often, this is explained by a retained intron near the 3′ UTR. The expression level of these non-coding major transcripts is lower than average.
